Apprentice Mate (Steersman)
The towing license has three levels or ratings (Apprentice Mate, Mate, Master) with designations like other license, i.e. Oceans, Near Coastal, Great Lakes & Inland, Western, and also Limited to certain routes and harbors. A mariner can apply for Apprentice Mate (Steersman) with 18 months sea time (assumes that at least 12 of the 18 months are on a towing vessel). Advancement to Mate (Pilot), and then Master is based on sea time and TOAR (Towing Officer Assessment Record).
A team of professional licensed mariners teaches the 15-day Apprentice Mate (Steersman) course. This course combines formal classroom training, hands-on and computer study.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate confirming that they have satisfied the following USCG requirement(s):
- The written examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original issuance or 46 CFR 10. 209(c)(iii) for renewal of a license as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels (Near Coastal or Inland). This course will NOT satisfy the navigation problems examination requirement for a license valid upon western rivers.
